Day 3 surprise – The Cascade Gardens Effect
A Building
On the third day of work after tying in all the new pipes the water was turned on and the “Cascade Gardens Effect” came into play. There was a leak. The plumbers discovered (a here-to-for unknown) hot water plumbing loop located in the living room wall. The loop feeds the first floor bathroom sink and the washer. It (the loop) was unexpected and may not be present in every building.

The plumbers discovered (a here-to-for unknown) hot water plumbing loop located in the living room wall. The loop feeds the first floor bathroom sink and the washer. It (the loop) was unexpected and may not be present in every building.
As a result, a hole had to be cut into the living room wall. The 8 x 6 inch hole is located near the ceiling, starting approximately 5 inches from the end of the wall (as pictured).
Washers and Dryers had to be removed and the pipe was tied in and brought through the laundry closet to the other side. Two holes were cut in the laundry closet. The second hole in the closet is ~5 ft below the hole pictured. These pipes will bring hot water into the lower bathroom vanity and the washer. The pipe up in the laundry closet will be covered with insulation and can be painted.
Outdoor wall in patio/ balcony area
Pipe leading to kitchen sink – ties in to main pipe coming down wall from rooftop. Two units share the main pipe coming down the wall from rooftop. It will split into 2 directions to feed unit kitchens and dishwashers. These pipes will be covered with insulation.
Important Note: As we move forward in this project there may be anomalies and differences in the plumbing from building to building. Some differences are known and some are not but for future reference by the time this project is complete we will know most of our plumbing anomalies.

January 19 & 20, 2009
The first day of work for the re-piping job was completed Monday, January, 19. Now that we have found the effected pipes, we thought it was important for all the residents to have some idea of what the work will entail. Thanks to Rene who was our "guinea pig" and took the picture and to Grace who has maintain our blog.
- Downstairs kitchen sink: There will be an approx 12" by 12" hole in the cabinet underneath the kitchen sink. (Directly below the the 2 sink turn-off valves )

- Downstairs kitchen sink: There will be an approx 12" by 12" hole in the cabinet underneath the kitchen sink. (Directly below the the 2 sink turn-off valves )
Outside - The plumbers will navigate the new pipe from outside in the patio or balcony area near the kitchen. Patios and balconies will need to be cleared 0f items approximately 4 feet from the kitchen/ outside wall to give the plumbers room to work.
- Downstairs bathroom: There will be one hole approx 36" from the wall with full length cabinets. In some units that will place the hole in the bathroom vanity. In other units the hole will be between the vanity/pedestal and the toilet. The hole will be approx 12" by 12" and approx 12" above the floor. The good news is by placing the hole there, we will be able to avoid moving the refrigerator and or the washer/dryer
- Upstairs Bedroom. (see attached photos). There will be 2 holes in the upstairs bedroom that shares a common wall with the bathroom sink. First hole will be approx 36" from the inside edge of the bedroom door frame, and approx 18" above the floor. Once again this hole will be 12" by 12" . The second hole will be directly above the first; starting about 2" from the ceiling and approx 12" by 12".

One Note: Please remember that the measurements may vary from building to building.
Thank you for your cooperation and patience.

We hope this information will help get ready when the project reaches your building/unit. We are going to need plenty of space at-and-around these areas so workers can accomplish their tasks as quickly/efficiently as possible.
Thank you for your cooperation and patience.
